The first in a series of films from the Taylor Howes team on life in design, growing a business, inspirations and demonstrations.
In this instalment, Karen Howes, CEO and founder of Taylor Howes Designs addresses how, in an age of social media where ideas and designs are readily copied, young designers can keep their concepts fresh and original, a question she is regularly asked under her guest lectureship role at KLC School of Design. An advocate for originality in design, Karen emphasises the need for designers to look outside of the traditional for inspiration and to turn to experiences, nature and the world for insights.
“As a designer, we often find ourselves planted in front of a computer screen for long hours at a time; it’s a part of the job, particularly in the tech driven world we live in, after all. While it’s easy to say that we find inspiration through visual blogs and social media websites like Pinterest and Instagram (which we do), the truth is they have their place and we, as designers, must step away from the screen and engage with the world around us if we’re to stay current. And more importantly stay ahead creatively”.
