“Creativity to me is letting imagery that has built up in your mind escape out into reality in whatever form you love. For your own personal joy, or for the world to see!”
The first of our many artisans and craftsman to be profiled in our ‘Keep Creativity Going’ campaign is Diane Hill, a highly skilled painter and chinoiserie expert who makes unique wallpaper designs for interior surfaces.
Diane is an artist specialising in Chinoiserie style wallpapers, an art form of the 18th century in which exotic hand-painted wallpapers were exported from the far east to adorn the interiors of high-class westerners. She fell in love with this ancient art form during her years studying textile design at university in Manchester.
Diane has been trained by master painters in China in the art of chinoiserie and traditional techniques, where she learned to use natural brushes designed for using watercolours on silk. This training has added to the wealth of knowledge she gained in her degree in textile design and the six years she spent as a senior designer at one of the UK’s leading hand-made wallpaper companies
In 2016 Diane decided to launch her own business and now trades as an independent designer from her studio in Hertfordshire, where she lives with her husband and two children. She draws on inspiration from historical reference books, Asian art and ancient techniques, to tastefully adapt classic designs for modern interiors.
When asked what creativity means to her Diane said “Creativity to me is letting imagery that has built up in your mind escape out into reality in whatever form you love. For your own personal joy, or for the world to see!”.
